About the experience
Every year from July to October, humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to the warm waters of Tonga to give birth and raise their calves. Tonga is one of the few countries where licensed operators take visitors into the water with them, in small groups with a guide. Seeing a mother and calf below you in clear blue water is the reason most travellers make the long journey.
Entry rules for Indians
Indian citizens receive a visitor visa on arrival in Tonga with a passport valid for six months, a return ticket and hotel bookings. Transit through Auckland needs a New Zealand transit visa, and transit through Australia needs an Australian transit visa. Fiji transit needs no visa for most Indian travellers. We confirm the rule for your routing. Rules checked in October 2026.
Getting there
Fly from India to Nadi in Fiji, through Singapore or Hong Kong, then to Nuku’alofa on Tongatapu. Domestic flights reach Vava’u, the main whale area, and Ha’apai. Allow two days each way.
Where to go
- Vava’u: sheltered waters, the most operators and the best chance of swims
- Ha’apai: quieter islands, fewer boats
- Tongatapu: the capital, blowholes at Mapu’a ’a Vaea and the Ha’amonga trilithon
How the swims work
Boats leave in the morning and search for whales. When a calm pod is found, groups of four or five swimmers enter with a guide. Operators follow strict rules on distance and time. Days without swims happen, so plan four or five whale days. You need to be a confident swimmer in open water.
When to go
- July to October: whale season
- August and September: peak, the most calves
- The rest of the year: quiet islands, snorkelling and kayaking
What our trips cost
Our Tonga packages start from the prices on their package pages: the five-night Tonga Honeymoon, the six-night Tonga Classic and the nine-night Grand Tour, on twin sharing, without airfare. Whale swim days are quoted separately and sell out early.
