About the yatra
The Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand covers four shrines in the Garhwal Himalaya: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Pilgrims traditionally travel from west to east, starting at Yamunotri and ending at Badrinath. The full circuit by road takes 10 to 12 days from Haridwar or Dehradun.
Opening and closing dates
The shrines open in late April or early May and close around Diwali in October or November.
- Yamunotri and Gangotri open on Akshaya Tritiya
- Kedarnath’s date is announced on Maha Shivratri
- Badrinath’s date is announced on Basant Panchami
For 2027, watch for the announcements in February and March. We send confirmed dates to everyone on our enquiry list.
Registration
Registration with the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board is mandatory for every pilgrim. Register online at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or through the app, with Aadhaar and a phone number. Checkpoints verify the registration QR code. Register as soon as the portal opens, since daily limits apply at peak times.
The route
- Haridwar or Dehradun to Barkot: base for Yamunotri, 6 km trek from Janki Chatti
- Barkot to Uttarkashi: base for Gangotri, a drive to the temple
- Uttarkashi to Guptkashi or Sitapur: base for Kedarnath
- Kedarnath: 16 km trek from Gaurikund, on foot, pony, palki or by helicopter
- Guptkashi to Badrinath via Joshimath
- Badrinath to Rishikesh and Haridwar
Roads are narrow and winding, and landslides close stretches for hours. Good itineraries keep a buffer day.
Kedarnath helicopter
Helicopters fly from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi to Kedarnath in about ten minutes. Book only through the official IRCTC heli portal, heliyatra.irctc.co.in, which opens a few weeks before the season. Fake booking websites appear every year, so never pay anyone else. Weather cancels flights often in the afternoon, so book morning slots.
When to go
- May and June: peak season, large crowds, pleasant weather
- July and August: monsoon, landslide risk, the least advisable months
- September and October: clear skies, fewer crowds, cold nights. Our preferred time
Carry warm clothes in every month. Kedarnath sits at about 3,580 m and Badrinath at about 3,300 m.
Health
Pilgrims above 50 or with heart, lung or blood pressure conditions should consult a doctor before the trip. Medical camps on the routes check pilgrims. Walk daily for a month before travel if you plan to trek to Kedarnath or Yamunotri.
What the yatra costs
Our Char Dham Yatra by road from Haridwar starts from the price shown on our package page per person on twin sharing, with hotels, meals and a private vehicle. Do Dham packages to Kedarnath and Badrinath take five to six days. Helicopter tickets and ponies are paid separately.
Practical tips
- Carry original ID and the registration QR code
- Keep cash, since ATMs fail in the hills

- Respect the plastic ban at the shrines
