Why go
Tamil Nadu has some of the oldest living temples in the world. Towers rise above every town, and rituals inside follow traditions more than a thousand years old. Add the French streets of Puducherry, the shore temples of Mahabalipuram and the hill stations of Ooty and Kodaikanal, and you have a full trip.
The state is easy to travel. Roads are good, food is cheap and excellent, and most towns have a range of hotels.
When to go
November to February is the best time for the plains and coast. Days stay between 25 and 30°C.
March to May gets hot and humid on the plains, often above 38°C in Madurai and Chennai. This is the season for Ooty and Kodaikanal.
June to September brings little rain to most of Tamil Nadu, unlike Kerala. The plains stay hot.
October to December is the north-east monsoon. Chennai and the coast get heavy rain and sometimes cyclones. Check the forecast before you fix dates.
Festivals:
- Pongal, the harvest festival, in mid-January
- Chithirai festival in Madurai, in April or May
- Karthigai Deepam at Tiruvannamalai, in November or December
- Natyanjali, a dance festival at Chidambaram around Mahashivratri
- The Chennai music season, December to January

How many nights
- 3 nights: Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Puducherry
- 5 nights: Puducherry, Thanjavur and Madurai
- 4 nights: Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari
- 4 nights: Ooty and Kodaikanal
- 8 to 9 nights: Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Puducherry, Thanjavur, Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari
Kanyakumari pairs well with Kovalam and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.
Getting there
Chennai is the main gateway, with flights from across India and abroad. Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore airports serve the south and the hills. Puducherry has a small airport with few flights. Most people drive from Chennai, about 3 hours.
By train, the network is dense. The Vande Bharat runs from Chennai to Coimbatore and Tirunelveli. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO-listed toy train, climbs from Mettupalayam to Ooty.
Chennai and Mahabalipuram
The stops that appear most often in our Tamil Nadu & Puducherry itineraries:
- Pondicherry
- Madurai
- Mahabalipuram
- Ooty
- Kodaikanal
- Rameswaram
- Thanjavur
- Chennai
Chennai is the arrival city. See the Kapaleeshwarar temple in Mylapore, Marina beach at sunset, Fort St George and the Government Museum. Try a South Indian breakfast at a classic darshini.
Mahabalipuram, 60 km south, holds rock-cut temples from the Pallava kings of the 7th and 8th centuries. The Shore Temple, Arjuna's Penance, a huge carved rock face, and the Five Rathas are all part of a UNESCO site. Plan a morning, before the heat.
Puducherry
Puducherry, often still called Pondicherry, was the capital of French India until 1954. The White Town has yellow and white villas, bougainvillea and streets with French names.
- Promenade beach in the early morning and evening, when the road closes to traffic
- Sri Aurobindo Ashram, in the heart of the White Town
- Auroville and the Matrimandir, 10 km away. Visitors see the Matrimandir from a viewing point. Entry inside needs a booking
- Cafés and bakeries, and French and Tamil food
- Paradise beach, reached by boat from Chunnambar
Alcohol is cheaper here than in Tamil Nadu.
The temple towns
Thanjavur's Brihadeeswara temple, built by the Chola king Rajaraja I around 1010, is one of the great buildings of India. The tower rises about 66 m. Visit in the evening, when the stone turns gold.
Near Thanjavur, the temples at Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram complete the Great Living Chola Temples UNESCO site.
Madurai's Meenakshi Amman temple is a city within a city, with 14 gopurams covered in painted figures. The night ceremony, when Shiva is carried to Meenakshi's chamber, takes place around 9 pm. Phones are not allowed inside.
Rameswaram, on Pamban island, is one of the Char Dham. The Ramanathaswamy temple has the longest corridor of any Hindu temple. Pilgrims bathe in 22 wells inside the complex. Dhanushkodi, at the tip of the island, is a ghost town destroyed by a cyclone in 1964.
Kanyakumari, at the southern tip of India, faces three seas. Watch sunrise, then take the ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar statue.
Tiruvannamalai, Chidambaram, Srirangam and Kumbakonam are other temple towns worth adding.
Ooty and Kodaikanal
Ooty, in the Nilgiris at about 2,240 m, has tea gardens, the Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake and the Doddabetta peak. The toy train from Mettupalayam takes about 5 hours up through tunnels and forest. Book well ahead.
Coonoor, lower and quieter, has Sim's Park and Dolphin's Nose viewpoint.
Kodaikanal, in the Palani hills, centres on a star-shaped lake. Walk Coaker's Walk, see Pillar Rocks and the pine forests, and cycle around the lake.
Both get crowded from April to June and on long weekends.
What to eat
- Idli, dosa, pongal and vada with sambar and chutney for breakfast
- Filter coffee
- Chettinad food in Karaikudi: pepper chicken and spicy curries
- Banana leaf meals at lunch
- Madurai jigarthanda, a cold milk drink
- Kothu parotta at night
- Tirunelveli halwa
Temple prasadam, like the laddu at Palani or the puliyodarai at Srirangam, is worth trying.
Temple etiquette
- Dress modestly. Many temples require men to wear a dhoti or remove shirts in inner areas. Women wear saris, salwar or long skirts
- Remove shoes at the entrance
- Photography is not allowed inside many sanctums
- Some inner areas are open only to Hindus. Signs show where
- Temples close in the afternoon, roughly 12:30 to 4 pm. Plan visits for morning and evening
