Why go
Sri Lanka is close, varied and easy for Indian travellers. In a week you can climb an ancient rock fortress, ride one of the most scenic train lines in the world, see leopards and elephants, and end on a palm-lined beach.
Flights from Chennai take about an hour. Food feels familiar, with rice, curry and coconut. Many Indian travellers also come for the Ramayana trail.
Visa
Indian citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, ETA, before travel. Apply online on the official Sri Lanka ETA site. Approval usually comes within a day or two. Fees and free-visa schemes for Indians have changed several times. Check the official site when you apply.
Carry a printout of the ETA, your return ticket and hotel bookings. See our Sri Lanka visa page for the latest links.
When to go
Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so one coast is usually dry.
December to April is best for the west and south coasts, Galle, Bentota and Mirissa, and for the hill country.
May to September is best for the east coast, Trincomalee and Pasikudah, and the north. The south-west monsoon brings rain to the west and south.
October and November bring inter-monsoon rain across the island.
The hill country, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella, stays cooler all year. Nuwara Eliya nights drop to 10°C.
Festivals:
- Esala Perahera in Kandy, in July or August, with ten nights of processions of elephants, dancers and drummers
- Vesak, the full moon in May, with lanterns across the island
- Sinhala and Tamil New Year, on 13 and 14 April

How many nights
- 5 nights: Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Bentota
- 6 nights: Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Colombo
- 7 nights: Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and the south coast
- 8 to 9 nights: add Yala for a safari
- 7 nights: the Ramayana trail, with Chilaw, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and the south
The Kandy to Ella train takes about 6 to 7 hours. Plan it as a sightseeing day, not a transfer.
Getting there
Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo is the main gateway. Direct flights run from Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Hyderabad and other cities.
Roads are narrow and drives slow. Colombo to Kandy takes about 3 hours. Kandy to Nuwara Eliya about 3 hours. Our packages include a private car with a driver who doubles as a guide.
The Cultural Triangle
The stops that appear most often in our Sri Lanka itineraries:
- Bentota
- Kandy
- Nuwara Eliya
- Sigiriya
- Ella
- Colombo
Sigiriya, a rock fortress built in the 5th century, rises 200 m above the plains. The climb passes frescoes and the Lion's Paw gate. Start at opening time to beat the heat and crowds. About 1,200 steps.
Pidurangala, next door, gives a view of Sigiriya itself and suits a sunrise climb.
Dambulla cave temple has five caves full of Buddha statues and painted ceilings.
Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura hold the ruins of old capitals, with stupas, palaces and the Sri Maha Bodhi tree, grown from a cutting of the tree at Bodh Gaya.
Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks see large gatherings of elephants from July to October.
Kandy and the hill country
Kandy, the last royal capital, sits around a lake. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic holds a tooth of the Buddha. The evening puja, with drums, is the best time to visit. Dress in white or light colours, with shoulders and knees covered.
Peradeniya Botanical Garden, outside the city, is one of the finest in Asia.
Nuwara Eliya, at about 1,900 m, has tea estates, a lake, and colonial bungalows. Visit a tea factory. Horton Plains, an hour away, has the World's End cliff, a dawn walk of about 9 km.
Ella has the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, Ravana falls and cafés with valley views.
The train from Kandy or Nanu Oya to Ella winds through tea country. Reserved seats in the observation and first-class carriages sell out weeks ahead.
Wildlife
Yala National Park, in the south-east, has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. Jeep safaris also see elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and birds. The park closes for part of September and October each year.
Udawalawe is the best park for elephants, with large herds year round.
Whale watching from Mirissa runs from November to April. Blue whales and sperm whales are seen on many trips.
The south coast
Galle Fort, built by the Portuguese and expanded by the Dutch, is a UNESCO site. Walk the ramparts at sunset and explore the lanes of cafés and boutiques.
Bentota is known for water sports and river safaris on the Madu Ganga. Hikkaduwa has coral and turtles. Mirissa, Unawatuna and Tangalle have quieter beaches.
Turtle hatcheries along the coast release hatchlings into the sea.
The Ramayana trail
Many Indian travellers visit sites linked with the Ramayana:
- Munneswaram and Manavari temples near Chilaw
- Seetha Amman temple near Nuwara Eliya, said to mark Ashok Vatika
- Hakgala Botanical Garden
- Divurumpola, where Sita is believed to have undergone the agni pariksha
- Ravana falls and Ravana cave near Ella
- Ram Setu viewing from Mannar or Dhanushkodi on the Indian side
We run this as a dedicated package with a guide who knows the stories.
Food
Rice and curry is the national meal, with three to six small curries, dhal, sambols and papadum. Try hoppers, crisp bowl-shaped pancakes, string hoppers, kottu roti, lamprais and fish ambul thiyal. Vegetarian food is easy to find. Indian restaurants operate in Colombo, Kandy and the main beach towns.

Practical tips
- Apply for the ETA on the official site only
- Carry white or light clothes for temples, and remove shoes and hats
- Do not pose for photos with your back to a Buddha statue
- Book the Kandy to Ella train early
- Carry Sri Lankan rupees for small shops. Indian rupees are not accepted widely
- Swim only on beaches with flags or lifeguards. Currents are strong in the monsoon
Tell us your month. We plan the route around the coast with the best weather.
