Why go
Singapore is small, clean, safe and easy to travel. In four days you can ride roller coasters at Universal Studios, walk under the Supertrees at night, see leopards on the Night Safari and eat at hawker stalls for a few dollars.
Families love Singapore because everything works. Trains are on time, taxis are honest, and almost every sight has something for children.
Visa and arrival card
Indian citizens need a visa for Singapore. Tourists apply through an authorised visa agent, not directly. We handle the application with your booking. Processing usually takes a few working days.
Every visitor must submit the SG Arrival Card online within three days before arrival. The card is free on the official ICA site. Avoid paid third-party sites.
Carry your return ticket and hotel booking. Your passport needs six months of validity. See our Singapore visa page for details.
When to go
Singapore is warm and humid all year, between 25 and 32°C. Rain falls in every month, usually as a short afternoon shower.
February to April is the driest stretch. November to January is the wettest, with the north-east monsoon, but rain rarely stops sightseeing.
School holidays in India, in May and June and over Diwali and Christmas, push up hotel prices and queues.
Events:
- Chinese New Year, in January or February, with lights in Chinatown
- Deepavali, with lights and markets in Little India
- Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, a night race in September or October. Hotels near Marina Bay cost much more
- Christmas on Orchard Road
- Great Singapore Sale, in summer

How many nights
- 3 nights: city, Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa and Universal Studios
- 4 nights: add the Night Safari and the zoo
- 5 nights: add Bird Paradise, a river cruise and shopping
- 7 nights: Singapore with Malaysia, or Singapore with Bali
Universal Studios takes a full day. Plan a quiet morning after.
Getting there and around
Direct flights reach Changi Airport from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad and other cities, in about 4 to 6 hours.
Jewel Changi, connected to the terminals, has the Rain Vortex, the tallest indoor waterfall in the world. Leave an hour before your flight home.
The MRT metro reaches nearly every sight. Pay by tapping a credit or debit card at the gate, or buy a Singapore Tourist Pass for unlimited rides. Taxis and Grab are metered and honest.
Sentosa
The stops that appear most often in our Singapore itineraries:
- Singapore
- Kuala Lumpur
- Bangkok
Sentosa is a resort island linked to the city by cable car, monorail and a boardwalk.
- Universal Studios Singapore, with seven zones, from Transformers to Jurassic Park. Buy an Express pass in busy months
- S.E.A. Aquarium, one of the largest in the world
- Adventure Cove waterpark
- Wings of Time, a night show on the beach
- Skyline Luge and the SkyHelix
- Madame Tussauds
- Beaches at Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong
- The cable car from Mount Faber
Two days on Sentosa suits families. One day covers the highlights.
Marina Bay and the city
- Gardens by the Bay. The Supertree Grove is free. The Cloud Forest and Flower Dome need tickets. The Garden Rhapsody light show runs twice each evening
- Marina Bay Sands SkyPark observation deck
- Spectra, a free light and water show at the Marina Bay Sands event plaza, every evening
- Merlion Park
- A Singapore River cruise past Clarke Quay and Boat Quay
- Singapore Flyer
- Chinatown, the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and the Sri Mariamman temple
- Little India, Serangoon Road and the Sri Veeramakaliamman temple
- Kampong Glam and the Sultan Mosque
- Orchard Road for shopping
Mandai: zoo, Night Safari and Bird Paradise
Mandai, in the north of the island, holds Singapore Zoo, the Night Safari, River Wonders and Bird Paradise.
The Night Safari opens after dark. A tram ride runs through the habitats, with walking trails between. Arrive early and see the Creatures of the Night show.
The zoo is open-concept, with animals separated by moats. Breakfast with orangutans is a highlight for children.
Bird Paradise holds more than 3,500 birds in walk-through aviaries.
Park-hopper tickets cover two or more parks. Plan the zoo in the morning and the Night Safari in the evening on the same day.
Food
Hawker centres are the heart of Singapore food. Stalls serve dishes for a few Singapore dollars, and several have Michelin recognition.
- Chicken rice at Maxwell Food Centre
- Laksa, a spicy coconut noodle soup
- Chilli crab and black pepper crab
- Satay at Lau Pa Sat in the evening
- Roti prata and teh tarik for breakfast
- Kaya toast with soft eggs
Indian food is easy to find. Little India has vegetarian restaurants serving South and North Indian food, and many hawker centres have an Indian stall. Komala Vilas and Ananda Bhavan are long-standing names. Jain food is available on request.
