Why Samoa
Samoa is a small Polynesian nation of two main islands, Upolu and Savai’i. Villages follow fa’a Samoa, the traditional way of life, and visitors sleep in open beach fales a few steps from the lagoon. It suits honeymooners and travellers who want a slow, quiet Pacific island with few other tourists.
Entry rules for Indians
Samoa gives visitors of all nationalities, including Indians, a visitor permit on arrival for up to 60 days. Carry a passport valid for six months, a return ticket and hotel bookings. Transit through Auckland or Australia needs a transit visa. Rules checked in October 2026.
Getting there
Fly from India to Nadi in Fiji, through Singapore or Hong Kong, then to Apia. Routings through Auckland or Brisbane also work with the right transit visa. Ferries cross from Upolu to Savai’i in about an hour.
Where to go
- To Sua Ocean Trench: a swimming hole 30 m deep, reached by a ladder
- Lalomanu beach on the south-east of Upolu, with beach fales
- Papaseea sliding rocks and the Piula cave pool
- Apia: the market and the Robert Louis Stevenson museum
- Savai’i: the Alofaaga blowholes, the Saleaula lava fields and the Afu Aau waterfall
When to go
- May to October: the dry season, the best months
- November to April: hot and wet, with cyclone risk
Village etiquette
Sunday is a day of church and rest. Swimming and loud activity near villages are frowned upon. Dress modestly away from resorts. Ask before entering village land or beaches, since many charge a small fee.
