Why Nicaragua
Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America and one of the least visited by Indians. A week here gives you a colonial city on a lake, an island made of two volcanoes, a crater with a live lava lake and Pacific beaches with good surf. Prices stay lower than in Costa Rica next door, and the crowds stay thinner.
Visa for Indians
Indian citizens need a visa for Nicaragua. India falls in the group of countries whose applications are referred to the immigration authority in Managua before approval.
- Apply through a Nicaraguan embassy or consulate
- Allow four to six weeks
- Carry a passport valid for six months, a return ticket and hotel bookings
Nicaragua ended its visa on arrival and visa substitute arrangements in February 2026. Do not fly without an approved visa in your passport. We prepare hotel letters and a day-wise itinerary for your application. Rules checked in October 2026.
Getting there from India
Managua is the entry airport. From India the journey usually takes two connections and 22 to 28 hours.
- Through Europe: Delhi or Mumbai to Madrid, Amsterdam or Paris, then to Panama City, San Salvador or Mexico City, then Managua
- Through the Gulf: from Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kochi on Gulf carriers to a hub in the Americas
- Through the United States: the shortest routing, but only with a valid US visa
The trip starts in Granada, 45 minutes from Managua airport.
Masaya Volcano
Masaya Volcano National Park is the highlight for most travellers. The road climbs to the rim of the Santiago crater, where on clear evenings you look down at a glowing lava lake.
- Go after sunset. The park runs evening visits from about 5.30 pm, when the glow shows best
- Queues build after 5 pm. We arrive early to get in with the first group
- Time at the rim is limited to about 15 minutes because of sulphur gas
- Travellers with asthma or heart conditions should stay back from the rim
- The park closes at short notice when activity rises, so we keep a spare evening in the plan
Daytime visits show the older craters, the visitor centre and the lava fields. Coyotepe fortress sits on the drive back to Granada.
Granada
Granada sits on the shore of Lake Nicaragua, founded in 1524. Painted colonial houses line the streets around the cathedral. Take a boat through Las Isletas, the small islands in the lake, walk to the bell tower of La Merced for the view, and spend an evening on Calle La Calzada. Two nights here is right.
Ometepe Island
Two volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, rise out of Lake Nicaragua to form Ometepe. A ferry from San Jorge takes about an hour. On the island you swim at the Ojo de Agua spring, cycle to Playa Santo Domingo, and hike to the San Ramón waterfall. Fit hikers climb Maderas with a guide. Plan two nights.
León and the north
León is the old university city, with the largest cathedral in Central America and a rooftop you walk on. Nearby Cerro Negro is a young volcano where visitors slide down the black gravel slope on a board. Add León for a nine-night trip.
When to go
- November to April: dry season, clear volcano views, the best months
- December to February: coolest and busiest
- May to October: green season with heavy afternoon rain, lower hotel prices
The Pacific side stays hot all year, around 30°C to 33°C.
How many nights
- 4 nights: Granada and Masaya
- 6 nights: Granada, Masaya and Ometepe
- 9 nights: add León and Cerro Negro
Costa Rica is next door. Many travellers add three or four nights there on the same trip.
What our trips cost
Our Nicaragua packages start from about ₹33,500 per person for three nights in Granada and reach about ₹85,000 for nine nights, on twin sharing, without airfare. Prices use October 2026 exchange rates. Return flights from India cost more than the land package and we quote them at actual cost.
