Why Micronesia
The Federated States of Micronesia is a country of more than 600 islands spread across the western Pacific, north of Papua New Guinea. Four states make up the country: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. Fewer than 20,000 tourists arrive in a typical year. For an Indian traveller, few trips feel this far from the usual list.
People come for three reasons. Chuuk Lagoon holds the wrecks of the Japanese fleet sunk in February 1944, and divers rank the lagoon among the best wreck sites in the world. Pohnpei has Nan Madol, a city of basalt columns built on a coral reef between about the 12th and 17th centuries, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kosrae and Pohnpei both have rainforest, waterfalls and reefs with almost nobody on them.
Who the trip suits
- Certified divers who want wrecks and walls without crowds
- Couples who have done Bali and the Maldives and want somewhere new
- Travellers counting countries
- History readers interested in the Pacific War
Micronesia does not suit travellers who want resorts, nightlife or big-brand hotels. Rooms are clean and simple. Restaurants are few. Roads outside the main towns are slow. If you accept the pace, the islands reward you.
How to get there from India
No airline flies from India to Micronesia, and the routing matters more than on most trips.
- Fly from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai or another Indian city to Manila, Tokyo, Seoul or Hong Kong
- Connect to Guam
- Take the United Airlines Island Hopper from Guam to Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae
The Island Hopper runs a few times a week and stops at each island in turn. We build the island order around the flight days, so an itinerary often runs Guam, Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae or the reverse. Allow a full day and a night for the outbound journey.
Guam is a US territory. Every Indian traveller needs a valid US B1/B2 visa for the Guam transit, even without leaving the airport. If you do not hold a US visa, apply well before you plan anything else.
Entry rules for Indians
Indian citizens do not need a visa for Micronesia. You receive an entry permit of up to 30 days on arrival. Carry:
- A passport valid for at least 120 days beyond arrival
- A return or onward ticket
- Hotel bookings for the whole stay
Rules were checked in October 2026. We recheck before every booking.
When to go
The islands are warm all year, around 27°C to 31°C. The real question is wind and rain.
- May to October: lighter winds and calmer lagoon water, the best months for diving in Chuuk and boat trips to Ant Atoll
- November to April: trade-wind season, still warm, with choppier crossings
Pohnpei receives some of the heaviest rainfall on earth, mostly in short downpours. Pack a light rain jacket in every month.
Pohnpei
Pohnpei is the capital island and the most varied.
- Nan Madol: reach the ruins by boat at high tide or on foot through mangroves at low tide. Go with a local guide, since the site sits on private land
- Kepirohi and Sahwartik waterfalls in the rainforest
- Ant Atoll and Pakin Atoll for snorkelling and manta rays
- Sokehs Rock, a short steep climb with views over Kolonia
Three nights covers the main sights at a calm pace.
Chuuk
Chuuk Lagoon is the reason most divers make the journey. More than 50 ships and aircraft lie on the lagoon floor, many at recreational depths. The Fujikawa Maru and the Shinkoku Maru are two of the best-known wrecks.
Non-divers snorkel over shallow wrecks and coral gardens and visit the Japanese lighthouse on Weno. Two nights works for non-divers. Divers usually stay four to six nights.
Kosrae
Kosrae is the quietest of the three islands we cover. The Lelu ruins, a walled stone town older than Nan Madol in parts, sit beside the harbour. The reef starts close to shore. Mount Finkol rises through cloud forest behind the coast. Two nights here makes a gentle end to the trip.
How many nights
- 5 nights: Pohnpei and Chuuk, a honeymoon pace
- 6 nights: Pohnpei and Chuuk with more time on the water
- 9 nights: Pohnpei, Chuuk and Kosrae
Add one night in Guam or Manila on each side if the flights connect badly. A short trip after a two-day journey leaves you tired and rushed.
What our trips cost
Our Micronesia packages start from about ₹63,000 per person for three nights in Pohnpei and run to about ₹1,65,000 for nine nights across three islands, on twin sharing, without airfare. Prices use market exchange rates in October 2026 and change with the dollar.
International flights to Guam and the Island Hopper fare usually cost more than the land package. We quote both together at actual cost, so you see the full trip price before you decide.
Money and practical tips
- The US dollar is the currency. Carry cash, since cards work only at larger hotels
- ATMs exist in Kolonia and Weno, not on outer islands
- Dress modestly outside hotels. Shorts above the knee offend in villages, especially on Chuuk
- Mobile data is slow. Download offline maps before you leave
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and your own dive computer if you have one
- Travel insurance with dive cover is a must for divers
Tell us your dates and whether you dive. We send a day-wise plan with flights within 24 hours on working days.
