Why go
Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean, about 2,000 km off the coast of Africa. Close to 70% of the people have Indian roots, and you hear Bhojpuri, Hindi and Tamil alongside Creole and French. Temples, Indian food and Diwali feel familiar.
The island has lagoons ringed by coral reef, volcanic hills, sugarcane fields and resorts that suit honeymoons and families alike.
Visa
Indian citizens get a visa on arrival, free of charge, for tourism. You need:
- A passport valid for at least six months
- A return ticket
- A confirmed hotel booking
- Proof of funds
Fill in the online arrival form before you fly. See our Mauritius visa page for the latest details.
When to go
Mauritius is in the southern hemisphere, so seasons run opposite to India.
May to December is the cooler, drier season. Days stay between 22 and 26°C. September to November is especially pleasant, with sunny days and calm seas.
January to April is hot and humid, between 28 and 32°C. Cyclones are possible from January to March. Most pass without trouble, but some bring days of rain.
June to August is winter. Evenings feel cool and the sea is cooler. Good for sightseeing, less good for long beach days.
Festivals:
- Maha Shivaratri, in February or March, when lakhs of pilgrims walk to Grand Bassin
- Diwali, with lights across the island
- Thaipusam, in January or February, in Tamil temples
- Chinese New Year in Port Louis
