Why Madagascar
Madagascar split from the Indian landmass about 88 million years ago, and most of its wildlife lives nowhere else. Lemurs, chameleons and baobab trees draw nature lovers. The country is large and roads are slow, so a good trip picks two or three regions rather than trying to cover everything.
Visa for Indians
Indian citizens get a tourist visa for Madagascar online through the official eVisa portal before travel, or on arrival at Antananarivo. The fee depends on length of stay. Your passport needs six months of validity and a return ticket. Rules checked in October 2026.
Getting there
There are no nonstop flights from India. The easiest routing is through Mauritius on Air Mauritius, which also makes a two-island trip simple. Other routings run through Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Dubai.
Where to go
- Andasibe-Mantadia: indri lemurs calling at dawn, night walks for chameleons, three hours from Antananarivo
- Morondava: the Avenue of the Baobabs at sunset, and the Kirindy forest
- The Tsingy de Bemaraha: limestone pinnacles, a long road trip in the dry season only
- Ranomafana: rainforest and golden bamboo lemurs
- Isalo: sandstone canyons and natural pools
- Nosy Be: beaches and snorkelling in the north
When to go
- April to November: the dry season, best for travel and wildlife
- September to November: baby lemurs, warm days
- December to March: rain and cyclone risk, some roads closed
