Why Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan is mountain country. Nine tenths of the land lies above 1,500 m, with the Tian Shan range running through it. Lakes, alpine meadows and herders’ yurts make it one of the best trekking and road-trip countries in Asia, at prices well below Europe. It is a short hop from Delhi and pairs well with Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan.
Visa for Indians
Indian citizens apply for the Kyrgyz eVisa online through the official portal. Approval usually takes about a week. Your passport needs six months of validity. Rules checked in October 2026.
Getting there
Flights connect from Delhi to Bishkek through Almaty, Tashkent, Dubai or Istanbul. Delhi to Almaty is a short nonstop, and Almaty to Bishkek is a four-hour drive or a short flight, which makes a combined trip easy.
Where to go
- Bishkek: Ala-Too Square and the Osh bazaar
- Ala-Archa National Park, 40 minutes away, for a first mountain walk
- Burana Tower, a 10th-century minaret on the old Silk Road
- Issyk-Kul, the huge high-altitude lake that never freezes, with beaches on the north shore
- Karakol, for the wooden Dungan mosque and the Jeti-Oguz red rocks
- Song-Kul, a high lake at about 3,000 m where you sleep in a yurt with herding families
- Skazka canyon on the south shore of Issyk-Kul
When to go
- June to September: the season for lakes, yurts and treks
- July and August: warmest, Song-Kul roads open
- December to March: skiing at Karakol
Nights at Song-Kul are cold even in August.
Food
Beshbarmak, plov, laghman noodles and fresh bread fill the menus. Vegetarians eat bread, salads, dairy and vegetable dishes and should carry snacks for remote areas. Bishkek has Indian restaurants.
