Why go
Gujarat packs a lot of variety into one state. The white salt desert of Kutch. The last Asiatic lions in the wild at Gir. Two of the most important temples in India at Dwarka and Somnath. A walled old city in Ahmedabad listed by UNESCO. Beaches at Diu, a short drive across the state line.
Roads are some of the best in the country, and the state is safe and easy for families. Gujarat is a dry state, which matters to some travellers. More on that below.
When to go
November to February is the best time. Days stay between 25 and 30°C, nights cool, and the Rann Utsav tent city runs at Dhordo.
March is warm but still comfortable. April to June gets extremely hot, often above 42°C in Kutch and Ahmedabad.
The monsoon runs from late June to September. Saurashtra turns green and Gir looks its best, but the park closes for safaris from 16 June to 15 October.
Festivals:
- Navratri, in September or October, nine nights of garba and dandiya across the state. Vadodara and Ahmedabad hold the biggest events
- Uttarayan, on 14 January, the kite festival. The sky over Ahmedabad fills with kites from dawn
- Rann Utsav, roughly November to February, at the White Rann
- Janmashtami at Dwarka, in August or September
- Shivratri at Somnath and the Bhavnath fair at Junagadh

How many nights
Gujarat is large. Pick one region or plan a longer loop.
- 3 nights: Ahmedabad and the Statue of Unity
- 3 nights: Bhuj and the White Rann, with a night in the tent city
- 5 nights: Dwarka, Somnath and Gir
- 6 nights: Gir, Somnath and Diu
- 9 to 10 nights: Ahmedabad, Kutch, Dwarka, Somnath, Gir and Diu
Ahmedabad to Bhuj is about 6 hours by road. Dwarka to Somnath is about 5 hours along the coast. Somnath to Gir is under 2 hours.
Getting there
Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport has flights from all major Indian cities and some international routes. Other airports serve Bhuj, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Vadodara and Diu.
By train, the Vande Bharat from Mumbai reaches Ahmedabad in about 5 hours 30 minutes. Overnight trains connect Delhi to Ahmedabad.
For Kutch, fly or take a train to Bhuj. For Dwarka and Somnath, Jamnagar, Porbandar and Rajkot are the nearest airports.
Kutch and the White Rann
The Great Rann of Kutch is a salt marsh that floods in the monsoon and dries into a white crust in winter. At Dhordo, a viewing platform and walkway take you onto the salt. Sunset and the full moon are the best times. On a full moon night, the salt glows silver.
The Rann Utsav tent city at Dhordo runs from roughly November to February. Tents range from basic to premium, with folk music, camel carts and handicraft stalls. Book early, especially around Christmas and full moon dates.
Entry to the White Rann needs a permit, issued online or at the Bhirandiyara check post. We arrange it with your booking.
Around Bhuj:
- Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal, the old palaces in Bhuj
- Kala Dungar, the highest point in Kutch, with a view over the Rann
- Handicraft villages at Hodka, Bhujodi, Nirona and Ajrakhpur, for embroidery, weaving, rogan art and ajrakh block printing
- Dholavira, a Harappan city and a UNESCO site, about 4 hours from Bhuj
Gir National Park
Gir is the only home of the Asiatic lion in the wild. The population has grown to more than 600 across the Gir region.
Jeep safaris run three times a day in the Gir National Park and Sanctuary. Permits sell online on the Gir forest booking portal and go fast in winter. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Devalia Safari Park, an enclosed area within Gir, guarantees sightings with a bus safari. Families with small children often prefer this.
The park closes from 16 June to 15 October. Stays sit around Sasan Gir village.
Dwarka and Somnath
The stops that appear most often in our Gujarat, Daman & Diu itineraries:
- Diu
- Sasan Gir
- Dwarka
- Somnath
- Daman
- Ahmedabad
- Dhordo
- Bhuj
Dwarka is one of the Char Dham and is linked with Krishna. The Dwarkadhish temple rises five storeys above the Gomti river. Aarti times change with the season. Bet Dwarka, an island reached by the new Sudarshan Setu bridge, has another Krishna temple. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga sits on the road between the two.
Somnath is the first of the twelve jyotirlingas. The temple stands on the shore of the Arabian Sea. The evening aarti and the light and sound show after dark draw large crowds. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside. Use the lockers.
The coast road between Dwarka and Somnath passes Porbandar, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. Kirti Mandir marks the house where he was born.
Ahmedabad and the Statue of Unity
Ahmedabad's old city became India's first UNESCO World Heritage City. A morning heritage walk through the pols, the old residential lanes, shows carved wooden houses, bird feeders and hidden temples. The walk starts at the Swaminarayan temple in Kalupur.
Other stops:
- Sabarmati Ashram, Gandhi's home from 1917 to 1930
- Sidi Saiyyed mosque and its carved stone window
- Adalaj stepwell, 20 km north
- Sabarmati riverfront in the evening
- Manek Chowk, a jewellery market by day and a food street by night
The Statue of Unity, the tallest statue in the world at 182 m, stands at Kevadia, about 3 hours 30 minutes from Ahmedabad. The viewing gallery sits at 135 m. Plan a full day, with the valley of flowers, the dam view and the laser show in the evening. The site closes on Mondays.
Diu
Diu is a small island off the Saurashtra coast, a union territory with its own rules. Alcohol is sold here, which makes the island popular for a night or two after a dry week in Gujarat.
- Diu Fort, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century
- St Paul's Church
- Naida Caves
- Nagoa beach for a swim, and Ghoghla beach for water sports
Somnath to Diu takes about 2 hours.
What to eat
Gujarati food leans vegetarian, often sweet and sour.
- A Gujarati thali, with dal, kadhi, three or four sabzis, rotlis, rice and farsan
- Dhokla, khandvi and fafda jalebi for breakfast
- Undhiyu, a mixed vegetable dish cooked in winter, around Uttarayan
- Kutchi dabeli in Bhuj and Mandvi
- Bajra rotla with garlic chutney and buttermilk in Saurashtra villages
Jain food, without onion or garlic, is available almost everywhere. Ask.
Dry state rules
Gujarat restricts the sale of alcohol. Visitors from outside the state can apply for a temporary liquor permit, and some larger hotels hold licensed permit rooms. Carry your ID. Diu and Daman have no such restriction.
