Why Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan sits on the Caspian Sea between Russia, Georgia and Iran. Four hours from Delhi, Baku mixes a walled old city with glass towers and a long seafront boulevard. Beyond the capital, the Caucasus foothills around Gabala and Sheki turn green in summer and white in winter. The country suits honeymooners, families and groups who want Europe-style streets at a shorter flight and lower cost.
Visa for Indians
Indian citizens apply for the ASAN eVisa at evisa.gov.az. The standard visa costs about US$26 and takes three working days. An urgent option comes within hours for a higher fee. The visa allows 30 days in a single entry. Your passport needs to stay valid for three months beyond the visa end date. Rules checked in October 2026.
Getting there
Nonstop flights run from Delhi to Baku in about four hours, and from Mumbai on some days. Other Indian cities connect through Delhi, Dubai or Doha. Baku airport is 30 minutes from the city.
Baku
- Icherisheher, the old city, with the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs
- The seafront boulevard and the Flame Towers, lit up after dark
- The Heydar Aliyev Center, a flowing white building by Zaha Hadid
- The Carpet Museum, shaped like a rolled carpet
- Fountain Square and Nizami Street for shopping and cafés
Give Baku two to three nights.
Day trips from Baku
- Gobustan: rock carvings up to 40,000 years old and, nearby, small mud volcanoes that bubble cold grey mud
- Absheron peninsula: Yanar Dag, a hillside where natural gas burns day and night, and the Ateshgah fire temple, built by Indian traders, with inscriptions in Sanskrit and Punjabi
The Ateshgah is a special stop for Indian visitors.
Gabala
Gabala, about three and a half hours from Baku, sits under the Caucasus. Ride the Tufandag cable car, visit the Nohur lake and the Seven Beauties waterfall, and stay in a resort hotel with mountain views. Two nights.
Sheki
Sheki is the old silk town of the north. See the Palace of the Sheki Khans with its stained-glass windows, sleep in a restored caravanserai and try piti, a lamb and chickpea stew. One or two nights.
Winter snow
From December to March, Shahdag and Tufandag offer skiing and snow play. For many Indian families, this is the closest proper ski resort with an easy visa. Ski schools teach beginners, and equipment hire is simple.
When to go
- April to June: mild and green, the best months for touring
- July to August: hot in Baku, pleasant in the mountains
- September to October: warm days, autumn colour around Sheki
- December to March: snow in the mountains, cold in Baku
How many nights
- 4 nights: Baku with day trips
- 5 nights: Baku and Gabala
- 6 nights: Baku, Gabala and Sheki
- Add Georgia by road or a short flight for a longer Caucasus trip
Food for Indian travellers
Azerbaijani food leans on kebabs, plov and fresh herbs. Vegetarians find dolma, qutab flatbreads with greens or pumpkin, salads and lentil soup. Baku has many Indian restaurants. We brief hotels on vegetarian and Jain meals.
What our trips cost
Our Azerbaijan packages start from about ₹29,000 per person for four nights in Baku, and about ₹43,500 for six nights with Gabala and Sheki, on twin sharing, without airfare. Return flights from Delhi usually add ₹20,000 to ₹32,000.
Practical tips
- The manat is the currency. Cards work widely in Baku
- Uber and Bolt work in Baku
- Dress modestly at mosques
- Do not travel to the Nagorno-Karabakh area without checking the latest rules
